MONTICELLO – A Woodbourne man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court to 14 years in state prison for the rape and criminal sexual act of a 14-year-old girl.
Jason Sherwood, 38, was convicted after a jury trial of the two felonies, which occurred on January 1, 2014 when Sherwood had sex with the girl while she was visiting him home for a New Year’s Eve celebration.
Sherwood, who has a lengthy criminal history that includes seven misdemeanor convictions and a previous felony conviction for burglary, received the maximum sentence allowed by law of seven years in prison on each of the two convictions, plus 10 years of post-release supervision on each conviction.
Sullivan County District Attorney James Farrell sought the sentences to run consecutively and Judge Frank LaBuda agreed.   Farrell said the sentences “are appropriate and just in light of his crimes and the tremendous harm he caused this young victim.”
Sherwood will also be required to register as a sex offender following his release from prison.
