SAUGERTIES – On Saturday, the weather was perfect for a trout fishing derby at the Mullen Family Farm in Saugerties.  The “Andrew Mullen Memorial Trout Fishing Derby and Pancake Breakfast” is a fundraiser for a Saugerties High School scholarship in memory of Andrew Mullen, who drowned in the family pool at the age of 13 months in the summer of 2000.  Andrew was one of five brothers of Ulster County Undersheriff James Mullen.

Andrew was the son of John and Margaret Mullen, the owners of  J. Mullen & Sons Excavating Company in Saugerties,  The family is well-known throughout Saugerties and Ulster County.

The 2024 fishing derby began with a 7:00 am registration. It concluded with a trophy presentation at 12:30.  The scholarship fund benefited from registration fees, raffles, and a 50/50 raffle in addition to general donations which are always welcome, according to one of Saturday’s volunteers.  Details on donating to the fund can be found at the bottom of the page.

The Mullen Family Farm sits at the base of the mountain on Cole Brook Road and the pond is located in the middle of a pasture where livestock mingled with both young and old anglers who were vying to catch one of the more than 400 Rainbow, Brown, Golden, Tiger, and Brook Trout that were stocked in the pond earlier in the week.

Mid Hudson News readers who would like to donate can send a check payable to “Saugerties High School Scholarship – Andrew Mullen” and mail it in care of Carolyn Mullen, 53 Burnett Road, Saugerties, NY 12477.
