MIDDLETOWN – Student housing
is now going to be allowed on the campus of the former Middletown Psychiatric
Center to make way for college students.
The Fei Tian College, a performing arts college with a main campus in western Orange County, plans to expand to the former psych center property and needed a zoning change.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano told the common council Tuesday night he is enthused with the college plans.
“You have seen the impact of Touro (medical college) on the Prospect Avenue and Ridge Street area, nothing but positive, and to have two, three, four, five hundred students running around at the community campus, I think is a great idea,” he said.
DeStefano said the college could develop plans in the future for thousands of students.
