COLD SPRING – An 82-year-old Cold Spring woman slammed on the gas pedal instead of the brake while pulling out of her driveway resulting in her vehicle slamming into a tree and overturning, police said.

Calls to 911 sent members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Office, Cold Spring and Highlands fire departments, Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and an Empress paramedic on Tuesday to the scene along Route 9D in the vicinity of Peekskill Road in Cold Spring.

Undersheriff Thomas Lindert said the driver, Susan Drake, told investigating deputies as she was departing her driveway to make a turn onto Route 9D, she attempted to step on the brake pedal but instead accelerated, driving off the road before striking a tree and rolling over.

Firefighters stabilized her 2007 Toyota suburban before using the Jaws of Life to cut the posts and roof off the vehicle allowing for EMS to extricate the elderly woman.

An ambulance took the victim who was riding alone at the time to a local hospital.

Police issued no summons.

Also assisting was the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services, Cold Spring Police and the Cold Spring FD Fire Police unit.
