Sullivan County woman sentenced for stealing over $25,000 in welfare benefits

MIDDLETOWN – A Pond Eddy woman was
sentenced Wednesday in Middletown City Court to three years of probation
and full restitution of over $12,000 on a guilty plea of welfare fraud
in Orange County.

State Inspector General Leahy Scott said Andrea Lee, 28, fraudulently
collected $11,169 in Child Care assistance benefits and $882 in SNAP benefits
from the Orange County Department of Social Services.

Lee had previously pled guilty in Sullivan County to petit larceny and
making a punishable false written statement as misdemeanors for stealing
more than $13,000 in child care assistance SNAP (food stamps) and Temporary
Assistance from the Sullivan County Division of Health and Family Services.
She was sentenced in Liberty Town Court in May to three years of probation
and ordered to pay restitution of over $13,000.

Between the two counties, the total amount of fraudulently obtained public
assistance was over $25,000.

The investigation leading to the arrest and conviction of Lee was assisted
by the State Police, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Department
of Social Services and District Attorney’s Office, and the Sullivan
County Division of Health and Family Services and District Attorney’s
Office.
