KINGSTON – U.S. Senator Charles Schumer visited the Ulster Performing
Arts Center in Kingston Tuesday afternoon, to pledge his support for a
$3 million economic development grant through the US Department of Commerce.

The 90-year-old theater remains an anchor for Midtown tourism, but is
in need of improvements to the restroom facilities. The lack of an air
conditioning system also has kept the attraction closed during the summer
months, at the height of the tourist season.

Other improvements will address building security and energy efficiency.

Bardavon 1869 Opera House Inc. in Poughkeepsie, which owns UPAC, is seeking
federal funding to help with the improvements. “It has a storied
history, part of the fabric of Kingston, and is woven into this community,”
Schumer said of UPAC.
“It’s a prime example of a local community theater that has
national acclaim. UPAC has entertained all ages for generations,”
Schumer noted.
“Because it’s a historic site, it has better opportunity
to garner federal funds, that’s why I’m here,” Schumer
said. “We know what programs work, and when I heard about this,
I said this is perfect for an economic development grant,” he indicated.
County executive Mike Hein called UPAC an economic development magnet.
“We truly are fortunate, I long for the day when we’re inside
watching a tremendous show, air conditioning is keeping it just perfect
temperature wise, everyone having an extraordinary time,” Hein said.
Funding, if approved, should become available after July 31st.
