WASHINGTON – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced an amendment to a transportation bill that would allow the state to tap into federal money designated now just for repair of bridges on federal highways.
In the Hudson Valley alone, there are 1,206 bridges that are in need
of repairs, many of which are locally owned, and Gillibrand said if her
measure makes it all the way, some of the money dedicated for federal
bridge repairs could filter down.
“This amendment would make sure that our bridges could be fixed and made safe for travelers and it would finally support the pressing infrastructure needs of local governments,” the senator said.
Gillibrand said the new Tappan Zee Bridge would qualify for funds under her proposal. Much of the funding for the new twin span is already coming from Washington and Albany.
