Transformer blows at Indian Point

BUCHANAN – One of two main electrical
transformers fire at the Indian Point nuclear power plant unit 3 Saturday
evening causing the plan to shut down.

Entergy reported that after the failure, an automatic sprinkler system
and onsite personnel extinguished the fire.

There was no release of radiation to the environmental. The cause of the
fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
Indian Point unit 2 remained in operation.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, state, county and local officials were
notified.

Rockland County Executive Edwin Day said he was “relieved beyond
words” that the incident did not involve serious injuries or loss
of life.

“Awareness –level communication protocols were immediately
enacted by the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Service with
all local systems operating flawlessly,” he said.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus activated the county’s Emergency
Operations Center in Goshen in response to the fire with top county officials
monitoring the situation.

Neuhaus said the actions taken by the county were for precautionary reasons
only.
