White Plains firefighter faces 16 charges in drunk driving fatality

WHITE PLAINS – A 35-year-old White Plains firefighter faces up
to 25 years in state prison if convicted in connection with the death
of one person and injuries to another when he sped drunk and crashed into
another vehicle that was waiting at a traffic light.

Erik Refvik of White Plains faces a 16-count indictment and a bail of
$50,000.

Authorities said he was doing 65 mph in a Chevrolet Tahoe at 4:30 a.m.
when he collided with a Honda Civic. The passenger in that car, Reyda
La Madrid was killed and the driver, Edgar Lopez, was injured.

Over the course of some 12 hours prior to the crash, Refvik was seen on
video drinking at four bars. At the time of the collision, he had a blood-alcohol
content of .21 percent, more than 2 ½ times the legal limit. He
was also found to have in his system cocaine, clonazepam, and bath salts.

The indictment against Refvik charges him with two counts of aggravated
vehicular homicide, one count of manslaughter, one count of vehicular
assault, one count of aggravated driving while intoxicated, two counts
of DWI, one count of driving while ability impaired by drugs, one count
of criminal possession of a controlled substance, one count of reckless
driving, and various vehicle and traffic law infractions.
