NEWBURGH – A three-year federal grant of over $2.8 million to cover the cost of 15 Newburgh firefighters has two years remaining, but city officials are wasting no time in applying for a renewal of the funding.
Mayor Judy Kennedy noted the wheels of government turn slowly and they want to be sure they secure the funding, which she said is vital to protect the city.
“Consider the fire that we just had in an apartment complex a couple of weekends ago and having the right people there to all of the various tasks made a real difference it keeping people alive,” Kennedy said.
That fire at Northwood Village Apartments at 408 Carpenter Avenue destroyed
several residences and displaced a number of people. One neighbor sustained
a broken leg.
