TOWN OF WOODBURY – State Police Thursday identified the man who ran from a trooper after being pulled over on the Thruway Wednesday evening as Bernell Wright, 37, of the Bronx. As the officer attempted to place him into custody for suspected drug possession, Wright resisted and fled into the northbound lanes of the superhighway and was struck by a car. The driver, Martin Nicolle of Roselle, New Jersey, and a passenger, Jill Weinberg of Chappaqua, New York, were uninjured. Nicoll lost control of his vehicle, ran off the road and overturned.
Wright was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call State Police at 845-782-8311.
