MONTICELLO – Not a huge amount of snow, yet, this long winter, but what has fallen isn’t melting and that continues to cause problems. This weekend could be a mess, with more snow likely Saturday afternoon into early Sunday.
Sullivan County Public Works Commissioner Ed McAndrew said Thursday they are handling the challenge.
“We’ve been managing to keep all our trucks on the road,” McAndrew said.  “We’ve had a few breakdowns where we’ve had to go out and tow a truck in.”
They are using a lot of salt.  McAndrew said that’s because they are sharing with three municipalities.
“We supply salt to ourselves, the Town of Thompson, Town of Highland and Village of Monticello and between the four of us, our bill is just over $900,000 at this point.”
That’s a bit more than a typical year, but McAndrew noted they are paying about 30 percent more for their salt this year.
