POUGHKEEPSIE – Family of fallen Poughkeepsie City Firefighter Timothy Gunther joined fellow firefighters on Monday to honor his memory by placing his name on the firefighters’ memorial at Mansion Square Park.
Gunther, who died at age 54 on May 5 while responding to a fire, was also posthumously presented with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal honoring his life and dedication.
Fire Chief Mark Johnson said it was a special day.
“The fire service is one big family and we help each other get through it and it is bittersweet where they are getting honors and bestowing things on him and the department, which is a really good thing, but it does bring back the memories, but that’s all part of the healing process,” Johnson said.
The Liberty Medal is considered the state’s highest honor, only presented to residents who merit special commendation for acts of exceptional valor and dedication.
