CARMEL- A homeless woman needing to use the bathroom is in trouble with the law for allegedly breaking into the Mahopac Animal Hospital to use the facilities.

Carmel Police Thursday reported the arrest of Vaune Vaccaro, 56, in connection with the bizarre incident that occurred earlier in the week.

Lt. Michael Bodo said patrols were summoned to the animal hospital on Route 6 after being notified by the owner of a possible overnight burglary.  “Responding officers interviewed the owner of the business, who was able to provide video surveillance footage of an unknown suspect inside the facility for several hours overnight,” he said. Carmel detectives responded to the scene to assist.

Bodo said veterinary staff confirmed nothing appeared to have been stolen and there was no damage to the hospital.

While canvassing the area, Detective Brian Smith observed a woman who fit the description of the person observed in the surveillance video.

“Upon further investigation, Vaccaro admitted to unlawfully entering the animal hospital overnight in order to get out of the rain and use the bathroom,” Bodo said.

She was charged with criminal trespass and possession of burglars tools.

Following arraignment, Vaccaro was released without bail pending future court action in Carmel Town Court.
