NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Police Department is more than 10 officers below its full authorized strength and now may be a good time to beef up the use of technology to help solve crimes, Mayor Torrance Harvey said.

He made note of one form that might be explored.

“Now NYPD has a drone unit now. We know that NYPD is like an army down there – they have a lot of man and woman power in uniform – and they have a drone unit now. So, we are trying to figure out how we can use technology to help you all do what you do. If you are not at full strength, technology can help you with that, with surveillance and solving crime,” he said.

The city has street cameras in strategic locations to monitor activity and had the Shot Spotter program until this year when the council cancelled it.
