To the editor:

We applaud the Clarkstown school board for passing policies that support safe and affirming school environments for transgender and gender expansive (TGE) students.  This policy reflects research-backed recommendations made by the State Education Department.  As the Vice President of Education & Training for Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP), my team and I have seen first-hand how affirming students’ gender identity is critical for their school performance, self-esteem, and overall mental health.  The consequences of denying TGE students a supportive environment can be devastating.

It is critical that young people have a voice in these discussions.  At the Clarkstown school board meeting this month, we were proud to see participants from our High School Advocacy program speak in support of TGE students using the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.  We stand with them against harmful rhetoric that transgender students are predatory in nature.  Policies that affirm transgender students make our schools safer, not more dangerous.

We know these myths about TGE students come from fear and ignorance.  Organizations like PPHP have educators who are eager to share their expertise on gender with young people, parents, and school professionals alike.  Fighting misinformation is an important step to make schools a safe place for all students.
