SUNY Orange announces 18 Encore classes for Spring 2024

MIDDLETOWN- SUNY Orange announced today its roster of Encore classes available for Spring 2024.  Encore is a program for adult learners ages 55 and older, offering courses across health and wellness, finance, art, history, literature, and more.  Classes are held at the College’s Middletown campus on varying days throughout March, April, and May.

Encore classes are available to senior residents of the tri-state area, and are generally short-run offerings with one to four classes per course in a combination of lectures or hands-on participation as appropriate.  The first class is scheduled to begin on March 6, 2024.

Knowledgeable subject matter experts with a professional background in a field and those who have spent many years studying or teaching a topic are class instructors.  They are professors, professor emeriti, financial planners, businesspeople, artists, healthcare professionals, and other enthusiastic field specialists.

The Spring 2024 semester roster of classes are: “Alzheimer’s Presentation,” “Book Club,” “Beginning Watercolor,” “Card Making,” “Color Pencil Drawing,” “Friday Film Series,” “Historic Hillside Cemetery,” “Hollywood Land Noir 2,” “Investments-Which Ones are Best for 2024,” “Learn to Weave a Small Catch-All Basket,” “Mahjong,” “Middletown State Hospital,” “Narcan Rescue,” “Paint with Produce,” “Strong Women II,” “The Interwar Period 1919-1939: Unleashing the Demons,” “Theodore Roethke, Poet,” and “Yoga: Beginning and Ongoing.”

“Narcan Rescue” participants will learn to recognize signs of opioid overdose, how to administer Narcan and receive a Narcan Rescue Kit. The Book Club will read and discuss “The Personal Librarian” by Heather Terrell and Victoria Christopher, “Small Things Like These” by Claire Keegan, and “All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds. Prospective attendees are encouraged to review the supplies needed for “Beginning Watercolor,” “Color Pencil Drawing,” “Learn to Weave a Small Catch-All Basket,” and “Paint with Produce.” The tentative films scheduled for the “Friday Film Series,” are “Sense and Sensibility,” “Laura,” “Key Largo,” “Sorry Wrong Number,” “Twelve Angry Men” and “Adam’s Rib.”

Membership in Encore is required in order to register for the upcoming courses, and membership must be paid before registration for classes will be accepted.  Membership dues are $45 per year and Encore has openings available for Spring 2024.
