POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie has been awarded a state grant of over $765,000 to address flooding and promote public access along the edges of the Fallkill Creek.

Mayor Yvonne Flowers said the creek is “an absolute gem, but it’s been underutilized for far too long.”

She said the funds will help mitigate flood risk.

“We always had the fear of its flooding again because back in storm Irene half of the fifth ward was flooded. Every so often I go in certain spots in the Fallkill and I notice that the wall is starting to crumble in certain areas, so we are hoping that some of this money will, along with working with Scenic Hudson and our engineers, will help us correct those issues,” she said.

The grant will also be used to improve biodiversity and waterway health, and increase public space along the creek.
