ELLENVILLE – A 23-year-old Ellenville man has been arrested and charged with stabbing a 20-year-old Kingston man at the Dollar General store on Route 209 in Ellenville.

The victim of the late afternoon Wednesday incident was transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill where he underwent emergency surgery for a deep stab wound to his upper left abdomen and was reported to be in stable condition and is expected to survive, Ellenville Police said.

Police began an immediate investigation and two hours after the incident, a State Police K-9 located the suspect, identified as Jordan Coffey, hiding in a closet in the upstairs apartment at 8 Mill Street.

He was charged with felony assault and arraigned in Shawangunk Town Court in the hamlet of Wallkill where bail was set at $50,000.

After arraignment, police said Coffey, who was handcuffed in the back, managed to pull the cuffs over his legs and fled out of the court and down the street with an officer giving chase.

He was located about 45 minutes later by an Ulster County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit and returned to custody where he was additionally charged with escape and remanded to the county jail without bail.
