ALBANY – A Blue Ribbon Commission formed by the State Education Department has recommended the Board of Regents adopt financial literacy as a high school graduation requirement.  Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) is praising the recommendation, which mirrors a bill he sponsors in the state legislature.

“Graduating high school seniors should enter adulthood with a basic understanding of personal finances,” said Jacobson.  “By requiring financial literacy in public high schools, New York can help ensure that every student, regardless of their current socioeconomic status, is equipped to make informed personal financial decisions.”

Jacobson is hopeful that this proposal to require financial literacy classes will be adopted when the Board of Regents makes final changes in the Spring.
