EAST FISHKILL- A bridge that spans Lime Kiln Road, crossing Interstate 84 in the town of East Fishkill has officially been designated the “Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge.”  Sweeney, a former NYPD and State Police officer, tragically passed away in 2021 after battling illness as a result of the aftermath of September 11th.

Assemblyman Anil Beephan (R, Fishkill) was honored to have been part of recognizing this local hero.

“I am deeply honored to share that Governor Hochul has signed our bill paying tribute to the indomitable spirit of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney,” said Beephan.  “His sacrifice at Ground Zero, which eventually claimed his life, is a testament to his unwavering dedication.”

The bill was sponsored in the State Senate by Senator Rob Rolison (R, Poughkeepsie), who personally knew Sweeney.

“Zone Sergeant Sweeney’s life was ordered and defined by service to his community and his state,” said Rolison.  “As a former Town of Poughkeepsie police officer who knew Sergeant Sweeney, I am honored to carry this bicameral legislation along with my colleague and friend Assemblyman Beephan designating an East Fishkill bridge and stretch of state highway in his memory.  We must continue to support and honor those who sacrifice to protect us.”

The bill to rename the bridge was the first piece of legislation passed by freshman Assemblyman Beephan this session.
