ALBANY- This week, Assemblyman Anil Beephan passed his first bill in the State Assembly honoring the esteemed service and memory of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney.  The bill designates a portion of the state highway system as the “Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge,” commemorating Sergeant Sweeney’s exemplary contributions to the community and his fellow State Troopers.

The designated memorial bridge spans Lime Kiln Road, crossing interstate route eighty-four in the town of East Fishkill, Dutchess County.  This dedication serves as a lasting tribute to Zone Sergeant Sweeney, recognizing his unwavering dedication and selfless commitment to public service throughout his remarkable career.

Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney joined the New York State Police following his service with the NYPD, bringing his invaluable experience and expertise to Dutchess and Putnam counties.  Over the course of nearly three decades, Trooper Sweeney ascended to the rank of Zone Sergeant within the State Police, solidifying his reputation as a respected leader and a pillar of strength within the law enforcement community.

Beyond his dutiful service as a State Trooper, Sergeant Sweeney actively participated in various organizations, including the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Fraternal Order of Police, the International Police Association, and the Knights of Columbus.  Additionally, his tireless advocacy efforts led to the renaming of two overpasses in honor of fallen colleagues and played a crucial role in the establishment of the State Highway Memorial Task Force.

Tragically, Zone Sergeant Sweeney succumbed to cancer in 2021, a direct consequence of his heroic assignment at Ground Zero following the events of September 11, 2001.
