WHITE PLAINS – Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced Tuesday that Tyrese Coghiel, 21, of Mount Vernon was arraigned on murder and gun possession charges for allegedly shooting 14-year-old Zyaire Fernandez.
“Together with the Mount Vernon Police Department and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, we apprehended and charged the defendant with murder after he allegedly took a young life. My Office will seek justice for the victim while continuing to support the victim’s family and a community in mourning from this senseless gun violence,” said Roach.
Coghiel was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court where he was charged with felony murder and criminal possession of a weapon was remanded to jail.
Coghiel is accused of shooting the victim in the torso on South 7th Avenue in Mount Vernon on March 9, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m. The victim, who was 14, was transported to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where he died.
