HIGHLAND FALLS – Black ice is being blamed for an 18-car collision on Route 9W at approximately 6:15 a.m. on Monday.  The accident, which resulted in both directions of 9W being closed until 8:00 a.m., sent four people to Montefiore St. Luke’s-Cornwall Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  Another five people were treated at the scene, and one refused medical attention at the scene, according to Town of Highland Police Chief Frank Basile Jr.

The multi-car wreck brought police from the Town of Highlands, Village of Highland Falls, Town of Cornwall, and Village of Cornwall on Hudson to the scene.  The police were assisted by the Fort Montgomery Fire Department, Town of Highlands EMS, and New Windsor EMS due to the number of potential patients requiring assessment and/or treatment.

New York State DOT was brought in to treat the icy road surface.
