FISHKILL – Town of Fishkill Police Chief Keith Dworkin and his department have partnered with a substance abuse agency to arrange for the safe disposal of prescription drugs and other medications.  The secure drop box for depositing the medications is located in the lobby of the police department and will be available for the public beginning on October 24, 2022.

The Fishkill Police Department is working with the Council on Addiction Prevention and Education (CAPE) to keep prescription drugs from being used by the wrong person.

Police Chief Dworkin said his department “is pleased to be part of this critical initiative to address substance abuse in our community and to save lives through the power of local drug take-back and disposal opportunities offered year-round, to complement the important existing national event.”
The Town of Fishkill Police Department works closely with CAPE to develop and implement strategies to address the opioid, stimulant, and substance abuse epidemic in our jurisdiction, Dworkin noted. “This project will enhance our efforts to tackle the substance abuse crisis by adding drug take back and disposal capabilities to benefit the Town of Fishkill and Dutchess County.”
Dworkin credited Lieutenant Craig Wood and Dora Celestino from CAPE for securing the grant responsible for the acquisition of the drug disposal receptacle, along with Councilmembers John Forman, Brian Wrye, and Carmine Istvan for supporting the project.
The drug disposal receptacles like the one at the police station are not designed to accept hypodermic needles or other sharp objects. People are asked to remove all personal information on the prescription labels and packaging before depositing items in the box.
