Elderly woman rescued from lake, dies later

TOWN OF ROSENDALE – An 81-year-old New York City woman who was an avid swimmer and went into Williams Lake in the Town of Rosendale late Thursday afternoon, had to be rescued, but died later at the hospital, Rosendale Police reported on Friday.

Officers said the woman, Carol Smith, was visiting friends when she entered the lake at around 4:50 p.m., had gone underwater while swimming and did not resurface.

She was located and rescued by responding police officers and firefighters about 30 feet from the shore in deep water. CPR was begun by police, firefighters and Mobile Life Support Services personnel. A pulse and heart rhythm returned and Smith was transported to a Kingston hospital

Rosendale Police, report, though that she passed away during the night.

They were assisted at the scene by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, Bloomington Fire Department and Mobile Life.
