SOUTH FALLSBURG – The Sunday morning fire at a building at 5218 Main Street in South Fallsburg has left between 17 and 19 people homeless, Fallsburg Town Supervisor Kathy Rappaport told Mid-Hudson News.

The remnants of the building that housed businesses on the ground floor and apartments above have been leveled and the street in the area cordoned off, she said.

The fire had the potential of being a lot worse than it was, Rappaport said.

“We do have a water crisis. We are lucky that we had 21 agencies respond. We had tankers brought in. We are thankful to all of our first responders and firefighters. They did an absolutely amazing job. It had the potential to be that catastrophic event that you never want to see happen,” she said.

No one was injured and the displaced residents have sought temporary shelter with assistance from the Red Cross while others are staying with family and friends. One tenant is believed to have lost a few cats in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
