MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office has started a safety initiative along Route 17B in Monticello to reduce the number of accidents that have been taking place on the busy thoroughfare.

On Tuesday, Mid-Hudson News had a chance to ride with Sheriff’s Deputy Stephen Sinistorie to talk about safety on Route 17B.  Sinistorie wants motorists to be aware of how they are driving.

“We’re looking for any erratic operation, whether it’s speeding or crossing over the center lines or the white lines, unsafe passing, and anything that can cause bad accidents,” he said.

Sinistorie set up his radar unit outside Monticello Raceway and within less than five minutes someone was clocked doing 60 miles per hour in a 45-mile-an-hour zone.  The driver was stopped and issued a summons.

Sinistorie has seen horrible accidents.  I’ve seen cars folded up to where they’re unrecognizable.”

As the summer driving season approaches, Sheriff Mike Schiff wants to make sure that driving in Sullivan County is safe for everyone.

I hope we all have a good motoring season and that everybody coming up the holiday or traveling up, here goes home safely,” said Schiff.
