HYDE PARK – The New York State Police are investigating a shooting that claimed a woman’s life on Friday afternoon. The April 29 incident occurred on North Cross Road in the Staatsburg hamlet of Hyde Park. The troopers are required by state law to investigate officer-involved shootings that occur in the state.
Several police agencies responded to reports of a domestic dispute at the two-family house at 50 North Cross Road in Staatsburg shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday. The house is owned by Paul and Patricia Mauer, according to official records.
Upon arrival, a Hyde Park Police officer encountered a woman who was brandishing a knife, according to a source for Mid-Hudson News. The woman allegedly failed to comply with orders to drop the weapon.
As the woman moved closer to the cops, an officer deployed a department-issued TASER that failed to stop the aggressive subject, according to the source. The same source also said that, after the TASER deployment, the woman continued to aggressively approach the officers. She allegedly failed to comply and one of the officers fired two rounds from his weapon, striking the woman in the chest with both rounds.
EMS personnel from the Roosevelt Fire Department responded and attempted to revive the woman. CPR was performed unsuccessfully.
Because the shooting involved an officer, the State Attorney General’s Office has been notified by State Police investigators.
