FERNDALE- To exchange ideas and to increase a collaborative effort between schools and municipalities, Sullivan 180 and Sullivan BOCES hosted an informal gathering of school, town, parks, and recreation officials at BOCES in Ferndale.

Shannon Cilento of Sullivan 180 wants the focus of the meeting to be on the improvement of parks, rail trails, and recreation.  “The goal is improving access to park facilities, recreation, and team sports, and to find different ways that municipalities and schools can collaborate with each other,” she said.

Dr. Robert DuFour, CEO of Sullivan County BOCES, showed off a new garden that’s being built by students on their campus.

“A gazebo was put in several years ago by our students, our building trades, and natural resources programs,” he said.  “Now they received a $2500 Grant from Sullivan 180 to renovate it by putting in new pathways and landscaping.”

Megan Mullally-Gorr of Sullivan 180 is optimistic about what would be discussed in the first attempt at gathering everybody in one place.

“The necessary people to initiate changes in Sullivan County are here and we hope for it to happen annually,” said Gorr.  “This is a way to get everyone talking and I think it will generate a lot of excitement.”
