STEWART AIRPORT – The New York Air National Guard Fire Department at New York Stewart International Airport serves not only the military side of the facility, but the civilian side as well.

The National Guard answers to the governor except when the president calls it up in times of national need.

The Stewart Guard firefighters are state employees as are all of the members at the facility; however, when new firefighters are hired to fill vacancies, they will be federal employees, a Guard spokesman said. Current members of the department will remain as state workers, he said.

The Stewart National Guard Fire Department is part of the Orange County fire mutual aid system and often responds to the City of Newburgh to assist.
