TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A fire in a Marist College townhouse on West Cedar Avenue in the Town of Poughkeepsie Thursday night caused the entire building to be evacuated.  The fire occurred around 9:30 p.m.

Fairview Fire Department, assisted by the Arlington and Poughkeepsie Fire Departments responded to the fire in a room on the second floor of the unit.  The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes and the first responders then checked behind the walls to make sure the fire had not spread.

The unit sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage.  College employees were on the scene to assist the occupants that were displaced.

Town of Poughkeepsie Police also assisted at the scene.

The cause and origin of the fire will be investigated by members of the state’s Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC).  At least two OFPC staffers were on the scene within 20 minutes of the original dispatch.
