POUGHKEEPSIE – City of Poughkeepsie Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 19 Taylor Avenue at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

After a brief foot pursuit, 18-year-old Josiah Mallory of Poughkeepsie was arrested and a loaded handgun was taken off of the streets.

Police Captain Richard Wilson said that several units responded to the call about gunfire and City 911 dispatchers were able to give a description of two subjects believed to be involved.  Officers located two teenagers matching the description, walking on the rail trail near Fairview Avenue.  When ordered to stop, the they fled in opposite directions but were soon detained by the city cops.

When police searched Mallory, he was found in possession of a loaded .38 caliber revolver and taken into custody.  The second subject, a minor, was interviewed by detectives from the juvenile division and released.

Police crime scene technicians who were processing the original scene, near the access road to the MLK housing complex, discovered a car’s gas cap cover.  A witness said that a black “Honda-type” sedan had been in the area when the shooting occurred.  A description of the vehicle was broadcast and minutes later, an officer located the car on Washington Street.  After interviewing the operator, a driver for Uber, it was determined that he was not involved but his vehicle did sustain damage from a bullet strike.  The driver told police that he was unaware that his vehicle had been struck.

Mallory was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.  He was being held pending arraignment.

The case is still under investigation and police are asking for anyone with information to contact the confidential TIPS line at 845-451-7577.
