GOSHEN – The added pandemic unemployment assistance program has resulted in many businesses being unable to fill job openings as people would rather stay home and collect the added benefit.

That has had a negative effect on businesses that have been unable to find adequate help, particularly during the summer tourism season, noted Orange County Economic Development Director Bill Fioravanti as he briefed the county legislature’s oversight committee on Monday.

“These businesses large and small are not equipped to handle it. Owners are totally maxed out; they just can’t find enough help. They are unable to provide the service. Restaurants and others are just not open on a certain day they want to be, so it is a real challenge,” he said.

Fioravanti said jobs are still being created in the region as more businesses open their doors.

The added benefit expires on September 6.
