Crowbar attack sends one to jail and victim to hospital

SAUGERTIES – Saugerties Police have arrested a 24-year-old town resident who allegedly beat a person with a crowbar and robbed the person of their personal belongings.  Police Chief Joe Sinagra said the assault took place on July 13.

According to Chief Sinagra, Tyler Brinkhuis allegedly struck the victim multiple times with a crowbar and subsequently robbed the victim of personal property.  Saugerties Police located Brinkhuis walking in the area of Route 9W.  As officers attempted to stop him, Brinkhuis ran away, trying to elude the police.  He was captured a short time later.

While the alleged assailant was being searched, officers found cocaine in his possession. He has been charged with Robbery, Assault, Grand Larceny, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. 

 Brinkhuis was processed and then arraigned in Town of Saugerties Justice Court, where he was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail/$30,000.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics from Diaz Ambulance and remains hospitalized for treatment.
