KINGSTON – The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) has issued an advisory regarding an ongoing phone scam targeting residents in Ulster County and surrounding areas.

The phone scam perpetrators falsely identify themselves as employees from a Police Department or Sheriff’s Office as part of the scam.

The UCSO advisory says that the scammers often tell the victim there is a bench warrant for their arrest and in order to clear their name, they must send a check, cash, or money order, provide a credit card number, or provide their bank account information over the phone.

The advisory serves as a reminder that a law enforcement agency would never demand payment from someone over the phone and people that received a call should never provide any personal information or financial information without verifying the caller.

Fraud victims can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/.
