POMONA – The fire that claimed the life of a Spring Valley volunteer fireman and a male resident of the Evergreen Center for Adults in Spring Valley on March 23 is being considered an “active criminal investigation,” Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh said on Thursday.

In a brief news conference held at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, Sheriff Louis Falco said the investigation into the cause and origin is expected to take weeks to months to complete as all evidence is being reviewed.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. and the building that housed over 100 residents went up in a ball of fire within minutes.

All residents were evacuated safely with the exception of the man who died after he was brought to an area hospital.
