BOYTON BEACH – Former Newburgh City Police Chief William Bloom died on Sunday.

His son, William, announced his father’s passing in a Facebook post. “It’s a sad day today for the Bloom Family. My dad, Bill Bloom, passed away at the age of 71. Too young to be taken away from his wife, his kids, his grandkids, and his friends, but God decided to take him to Heaven,” the younger Bloom wrote.

Bloom served as a police officer for over 30 years, rising through the ranks of the Newburgh department to become chief, a post he held for 10 years, from May 1994 to September 2004.

“I will never forget the words he said at his retirement ceremony – ‘I lived my life being a police officer and I will die a police officer’,” his son remembered.

He retired to Boyton Beach, Florida.
