MIDDLETOWN – Courts in New York have been conducting business virtually because of the ongoing concerns from the pandemic.

In Middletown, City Corporation Counsel Alex Smith has been communicating with traffic offenders via the US Postal Service.

“By mail, I made them offers and gave them instructions on how to fill it out. So are waiting to see how well that works. We are back down to two days a week, It is too early to tell if it is working well. Many people pled guilty by mail. Other courts have done it,” he said.

So far, Smith said he has mailed out a couple of hundred plea bargaining offers to vehicle and traffic violators.
