NEWBURGH – Newburgh City Councilman Anthony Grice, Tuesday, announced his candidacy for Orange County Clerk. As a Democrat, he will face the current Deputy County Clerk Kelly Eskew, who is running as a Republican for the top job.

Grice, who has been a councilman for three years, said the clerk’s office is often the first place people go to in local government.

“Even in a city hall, one of the first offices that you see is the clerk’s office and then when you go to the government center out in Goshen, it’s one of the first offices that you see is the clerk’s office, so that’s their main entry point in city government. So, it’s important that you have someone there who understands the needs of the community, who reflects the community,” he said.

The Orange County Clerk’s Office has been in existing since 1702 and as far as Grice knows, there has never been an African American county clerk.

Grice has been an educator for some 24 years and is currently employed by the Enlarged Newburgh City School District.
