GOSHEN – As the race continues to develop a safe vaccine against the coronavirus, when one is ready for distribution, Orange County Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman said she would not think twice about sticking her arm out for the shot.

Some have said they would wait to see if side effects develop, but Gelman said in the U.S., U.K., and other developed nations, the testing has been extensive.

“The vaccine trials have undergone phase three clinical trials where you have thousands and thousands of participants. So, right now we are waiting to see the long-term efficacy and safety,” she said. “Unfortunately, countries such as Russia and China bypassed those phase three clinical trials and just decided to administer to their population-at-large instead.”

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer announced just days ago that it has developed a vaccine that can be up to 90 percent effective in preventing the virus.
