Man charged with running over two men, killing one

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon Police arrested a 26-year-old man on charges of manslaughter and assault on Wednesday for allegedly running over two men on October 1, killing one of the victims. The suspect, Mount Vernon resident Jalen Marin, who has no prior criminal history, turned himself in to the city’s Major Case detectives, accompanied by his attorney.

Police say that on October 1, 2020, at approximately. 10:48 p.m. members of the Mount Vernon Police Department responded to the area of 47 Grove Street on a report of two gunshot victims. Upon arrival, officers observed two individuals who appeared to have been run over by a vehicle. One victim, later identified as 43-year-old Mount Vernon resident Romo Jeffress was pronounced dead by paramedics. The second victim, a 35-year-old resident of Mount Vernon suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and shoulder.

Police officials say that a combined effort of several police divisions led to the determination that Marin was the primary suspect. The department also indicated that the investigation is ongoing and are asking for anyone with information to contact the Major Case Unit at 914-668-6841.
