GOSHEN – It was too late for one horse that had died, but Pets Alive, along with the Hudson Valley SPCA Humane Law Enforcement and Goshen Police rescued a second horse from a muddy onion field in the Town of Goshen.
The horse, which the Good Samaritans named Cailan, which means Warrior of Life, was starving with protruding ribs and hip bones and was hundreds of pounds underweight, said Pets Alive Executive Director Becky Tegze.
The horse was rescued on Saturday, standing by his equine mate that had died the day before.
Pets Alive officials said there was no grass for grazing and no drinking water, just a muddy field with a makeshift shed for shelter and a few trees for shade. An electric fence surrounded the field, keeping them inches away from grass.
“What makes this case that much harder for us to handle is that there is evidence that humans were there watching the two horses starve and suffer,” said Tegze.
Cailan is now at Pets Alive in Middletown where he will receive veterinary care.
