GOSHEN – Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler, on Thursday, April 16, recognized National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which will take place April 19-25, 2020.
The week is sponsored by the federal Office for Victims of Crime, which assists local jurisdictions in raising awareness about the injuries to and rights of victims.
Each year since he took office in 2014, Hoovler has acted as the emcee of the Orange County Crime Victim’s Vigil, held at different locations around the county during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The Vigil brings together victims, government officials, service providers, and community members, to acknowledge the losses of victims and to spread information about services available to them.
This year, the vigil was scheduled to be held on Tuesday, April 21, at the Newburgh Unity Center. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the cancellation of the event.
“Victims are our top priority, and we strive every day to prevent people from being victimized, to protect them after they are victimized, and to assist however we can in getting them compensation and services,” said Hoovler. “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and our annual Crime Victims’ Vigil are but a small part of what we owe victims. It’s a shame that this year’s vigil had to be canceled, but rest assured that we’ll be back next year to support those who have been victimized by crime.”
