POUGHKEEPSIE – Thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Henry Nias Foundation, Poughkeepsie Farm Project is launching its ‘Poughkeepsie Food Power at Home’ program.

The new initiative adds to the after-school program at six Poughkeepsie schools where children are taught how to prepare healthy meals with locally grown produce.

Farm Project Education Director Jamie Levato said the kick-off coincides with today (Friday, February 28) being the official Community Supported Agriculture day. “It’s a program that revolves around food so we do gardening and cooking with the students, a lot of social, emotional learning,” she said. “What we found is that the students are really eager to continue cooking and doing these activities with their families at home and we have this new component where we are able to send them home from the program once a week with vegetables that they can cook with their families using the recipes that they have prepared in class already.”

This new pilot program will run through April and start up again in September 2020 for the new school year.
