TOWN OF WALLKILL – In years past, rate increase hearings for Orange and Rockland Utilities would pack the house. That is not the case anymore as Tuesday night’s hearing at Wallkill Town Hall drew more company officials than residents.
The three-year plan would increase the typical electric customer bill by about $2.90 per month while it would lower the average monthly natural gas user bill by $1.99.
O&R spokesman Michael Donovan said smart meter installation will continue across its entire service territory and that technology is important as the nation shifts to renewable energy sources and away from fossil fuels.
“The smart meters speak to that in terms of giving customers a lot more information about how they are using their energy, and that’s very important for folks to be able to deal with these new energy providers who will need that kind of information to tailor energy programs for folks,” Donovan said.
The new rates cover only the delivery of electricity and natural gas to O&R customers.
