WASHINGTON – US Senator
Kirsten Gillibrand charged the Trump Administration on Tuesday with dragging
its heels by not implementing new regulations that would end the use of
PFAS chemicals in aircraft firefighting foams.
Those PFOA and PFOS chemicals were used by the Stewart Air National Guard Base with runoff into area streams that fed into, and contaminated, the City of Newburgh’s drinking water supply at Washington Lake.
Gillibrand is also concerned that the military has not begun its remediation of the chemical contamination in the Newburgh watershed.
“We just got them $170 million to the work. They need to be cleaning it up and they certainly shouldn’t be using anymore PFAS foam.”
Gillibrand also supports the City of Newburgh’s efforts to be made
whole in its water contamination with legal action against the Department
of Defense, National Guard, State of New York, Port Authority and others.
