GARDINER – An Accord man is in the Ulster County Jail following an auto chase that ended in a crash.
Michael Smith, 32, was arrested when he crashed his pickup truck on Route 44/55 in the Town of Gardiner.
The chase began around 5:45 p.m. on November 4 when he was involved in a pursuit with Rosendale Town Police. He was first observed by a trooper at Route 213 and Route 32 at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles in a no passing zone. The chase was terminated in the interest of public safety but at 6:05, troopers responded to a report of a Dodge pickup truck on Route 44/55 in the Town of Gardiner.
The first trooper responded to the scene and spotted Smith walking away from the crashed vehicle.
Smith was arrested and charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and felony DWI because of a previous conviction within 10 years. He is held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
