YONKERS – When MGM Resorts Internationally formally takes over Empire City Casino and Yonkers Raceway in the first quarter of 2019, it is expected to result in between $7 million and $8 million in taxes paid to the City of Yonkers, Mayor Michael Spano said Thursday.
“MGM clearly feels they are investing not only in a casino but in the city,” the mayor said. “That speaks volumes about their commitment to Yonkers.” He said the city’s message to MGM has been “there is great enthusiasm for this acquisition because it brings one of the world’s biggest names in hospitality and entertainment to Yonkers, with all the opportunities for investment, jobs and growth that go along with it.”
Spano said there is space on the Empire Casino property that would be ideal for hotels, entertainment and other development. “Full gaming would provide a major boost to the city’s tax base, and would result in thousands of new permanent jobs that pay well.”
At present, Empire City is a racino with electronic video lottery games, the same as the racino at Monticello Raceway offers.
