WHITE PLAINS – A Westchester County jury convicted a former Yonkers man of murder in the death of a Yonkers cab driver in 2008.
Damon Scott, 42, was convicted just a few hours after Judge George Fufidio charged the jury on Wednesday.
Scott faces 25 years to life in prison when sentenced next month. He was a driver for Yonkers Union Taxi.
It was on June 16, 2008 at about 4:50 p.m. when Scott drove up alongside the victim, Jerome Hancock, 35, who was waiting for a cab in front of Mexico Car Service on South Broadway in Yonkers.
Scott opened fire striking him in the chest and killing him, and then drove off. Witnesses at the scene of the shooting called 911 and Yonkers Police responded.
Scott fled to Georgia to elude police. For almost a year, he remained in Georgia living under several aliases, unknown to Westchester Authorities.
In 2013, the Yonkers Police Cold Case Unit reopened the case.
Scott was arrested in Alpharetta, Georgia on an unrelated matter in 2017. It took police in Georgia some time to confirm his identity. When they did, they notified Yonkers Police. An arrest warrant was lodged. Scott waived extradition and was returned to Westchester where he faced the murder charge.
